It’s that time of the year, just before the holidays when we get a bit lazy and the cold weather is affecting our motivation to keep active. Maybe you are one of the really committed fitness enthusiasts that are not affected by the season and the weather, but unfortunately this winter I have not followed my fitness routine and I am in need of a bit of push. If you are like me, keep reading to get some fitness inspiration. :)
We have different reasons for trying to maintain a body exercise routine, but the ultimate goal is to embrace a healthier lifestyle, feel more energetic and feel good in our body. Some of us want to lose weight, others simply want to tone up and build more body muscle. Perhaps you want to find some “me” time and relax or you really want to go crazy and release some tension? Depending on your goal, you may want try different types of workouts to achieve the results you want.
So what is the best workout for you? Here are the most popular types of workouts and the benefits of each one.
General training/Legs, Bums and Tums
I love my LBT classes, because they always evenly activate all parts of my body. I sweat a lot and I feel super energised after a workout. If you haven’t tried it before, you should expect to do a lot of squats, combined with other leg/bum exercises and ab-blasting sessions. It’s great if the training your doing is also more general and includes some arm exercises as well. These types of full-body workouts will allow you to build more muscle, tone your whole body and burn more calories naturally, even after the workout is over. Yes, if the workout is done properly, your body has the ability to continue to burn calories hours and hours after the session. Simply put, the more muscles you build, the more calories your body is going to burn even when not exercising.
Yoga & Pilates
Yoga and Pilates are different types of workouts (I don’t even think “workout” is the right term for yoga), but they do have some things in common. They focus on endurance, flexibility and also offer a more peaceful physical exercise, which allows you to relax and switch off from the busy daily routine. However yoga is not just a set of physical exercises, it’s also a spiritual practice, that can teach you some powerful breathing and meditating techniques. Both practices can also be incredibly beneficial for those with back and posture problems. So if your goal is to gain better control of your body and relax your mind, than definitely explore Yoga and Pilates.
Aerobics isn’t probably as popular as it was some years ago, however the aerobics workout is a really good way of maintaining cardiovascular fitness. The aerobic exercises increase your heart rate and help you burn calories, as well as tone your muscles. If you are having trouble catching your breath when going up the stairs and you want to increase your stamina, give aerobics a go. It can be quite fun as well actually!
Why not combine them all?
In order to keep yourself motivated and give your body the best mixture of physical experience, it’s best to combine 1-2 types of workouts (or more) and stick to a routine. My usual routine normally includes general body (LBT) exercises, as well as yoga and kettlebells classes, but I will talk more about kettlebells another time. It’s difficult to find good local gyms that offer a good variety of classes with experienced trainers so you might want to consider the benefit of joining an online gym. Yes, online gym is the future! It’s easily accessible and you get to do your routine in the comfort of your own home while still getting trained by a professional.
